Channel Island History Sites

Guernsey CIOS was formed in 1961 to study all aspects of the German military occupation of the British Channel Islands during the Second World War. The society organises guided tours, excursions and talks throughout the Islands and France. It also continues to build up an extensive sound, documentary and photographic archive. Practical projects include the restoration of the Naval Signals H.Q. bunker at St. Jacques on the outskirts of St. Peter Port.

Festung Guernsey was formed in Guernsey in October 2005 by a number of enthusiasts wishing to actively restore or conserve important WWII fortifications.

Jersey Heritage was founded in 1981. The Trust is an independent organisation that receives an annual grant from the States of Jersey to support its running costs. Admission income from visitors and support from sponsors are also vital to keep it operating. Here in Jersey, the Trust is responsible for the Island's major historic sites, award-winning museums and public archives and hold collections of artefacts, works of art, documents, specimens and information relating to Jersey's history, culture and environment.

La Société Jersiaise was founded in 1873. It promotes and encourages:

  • The study of the history, the archaeology, the natural history, the language and many other subjects of interest in the Island of Jersey
  • The works of the Jersey Heritage Trust and the Jersey Museums Service, and the provision of information and voluntary helpers
  • The conservation of the Island's natural environment
  • The preservation of Jersey's historical buildings and monuments
  • The publication of books and articles on topics of local interest
  • Exhibitions and displays of work
  • The collection of artefacts, books, paintings, photographs and maps of the Island
  • Through the Barreau Art Scholarship the encouragement of contemporary art by young Islanders

Jersey War Tunnels tells the true story of the Occupation of Jersey during World War Two. It is one of the Island 's most popular tourist attractions as well as an important site of heritage conservation and interpretation.

The Channel Islands Military Museum have a unique collection of German Militaria on display, from uniforms and equipment to paperwork. All from the occupation era, displayed in an original and restored German Bunker

A Selection of Fortification Sites

Fortress Study Group is the only international society concerned with the study of all aspects of military architecture and fortifications and their armaments, especially works constructed to mount and resist artillery. The group was formed in 1975 at Pembroke College, Oxford to provide an opportunity for those interested in fortifications and military architecture to meet, get to know one another and publish their work.

The Adolf Guns (Norway)- 40,6cm SK C/34 at Trondenes, outside Harstad, North Norway. The Battery is today one of the best preserved in the entire Atlantic Wall. It is open for visitors. Out of season - booking required. Guided tours 2008; From 16 June to 15 August at 1100, 1300 and 1500 Meet at the gate to Trondenes military camp. Normally the tour takes 1 ½ hours
